DETAILS THAT MAKE THE DIFFERENCE
Over the last 2-3 weeks, I've curated the Collabratory specifically for branding photography sessions. I relied on the spaces and studios I've worked in and visited as inspiration to create a space that fits perfectly with my style of branding photography.
1. TERRAZO-STYLE FLOOR
I opted to seal the studio's old, blue tile floor with an epoxy-type paint to brighten the space overall. (Before & After #glowup coming soon)
I spent an entire weekend scrubbing, washing, prepping, priming, painting, and sealing the floor before I could even begin moving anything in!
The best part of this process? Tossing a triad of mocha paint chips in the air to create a terrazzo-style effect. On Day 2 of the process, I imagined tossing confetti over 1200 square feet of wet, Vanilla Milkshake paint-covered tiles! This feature is great for adding a touch of interest to extra-wide photos (think full-body captures) where a plain white floor and walls just don't cut it!
This might be one of my favorite parts of the whole place – but I think I say that about every part of the studio!
2. PLANTS GALORE
Just like everyone else during the pandemic, I somehow acquired a ridiculous amount of plants (purchased and propagated). I've always loved how large and small house plants can soften and add depth to my imagery.
Studio Q and Modern Well are two of my biggest inspiration locations for this!
I slowly but surely brought many of my personal house plants to the studio when the temps were slightly above freezing – the warmest temps I got during the transition! I got just lucky enough to have the majority of the move during a sub-zero dip!🥶🥶🥶
I visited Mother Earth Gardens (my new neighbor in northeast) and Tonkadale to add some friends to the bunch because “too many plants” isn't a real thing…
3. WINDOWS FOR DAYS
Ok, so I didn't have anything to do with updating the windows but I have arranged the space to be able to utilize the incredible natural light for any session – morning or afternoon!
Though I have to say, the afternoon sessions I've had recently have proven that the bright, natural light beaming through the windows offer a really incredible feature to any brand's photos!
4. EASY-TO-MOVE MCM FURNITURE
I've learned that a well-oiled photo studio offers easy-to-move furniture. Everything in the Collabratory is light-weight and easy to move and adjust the space. I specifically selected these pieces as staples that can be styled to work perfectly with soft, glamorous brands, with moody, edgy brands, buttoned-up professional brands, and everything in between!
5. PLUS IT'S ALL MULTI-PURPOSE
Everything in the Collabratory is multi-functional. The main table offers space for 6 people to meet. It's also on a sit-stand desk frame so it can be raised or lowered to double as a desk or high-top table. It can be used as a set for product photography and is on wheels for easy moving in and out of the camera frame.
The coffee table features a barely-there-pinky marble top that is perfect for top-down flatlay images, and doubles as a second product photography set.
The small writing desk (pictured above) doubles as a side table and offers another great service for flatlay photos.
6. MORE THAN JUST A CHANGING ROOM
With the pull of a curtain, you have a fully private changing room, complete with desk and chair, mirror and lighting that can be as bright or dim (or as colorful) as you want!
More so, you can take a break from your session to answer a few emails or hop on a Zoom call that can't wait because business never quits, amiright?!
